This is a great recipe.  It's an old-fashioned pudding cake.  As it bakes, a fudge pudding forms at the bottom of the cake. When served hot, vanilla ice cream is a natural accompaniment!

Silas Griffith Inn's Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

This recipe is in four steps:

1.  mix 2 cups flour with 4 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 1/3 cups sugar.

2.  Heat 1/2 cup of milk with 1/4 cup of butter in a microwave for 1 minute (to melt butter).  Place in a large mixing bowl with 1/2 cup milk and 2 teaspoons vanilla.  Mix.

3.  add the first mixture, and beat well.  Add 1 cup chopped walnuts.

Grease a 13 by 9 inch pan.  Spread the batter in this pan.

4.  In a separate bowl, mix 2 cups (packed) brown sugar, 1/2 cup baking cocoa.  Pour this dry mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.  Place on the rack in the oven, and pour 4 cups boiling water over the dry mixture.

Bake for 50 minutes in a 350 degree oven.  Do not turn cake out of pan; this cake makes its own fudge sauce in the bottom. Cut and serve while warm, scooping up the fudge sauce as you serve. Wonderful with vanilla ice cream.
