When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as fate--Carl Jung

How We Make Changes

Change can occur in your life in many ways. One way to create change is through understanding yourself, and by bringing an inner situation into consciousness. Another way to create change is by changing your behavior. Change may also occur when we re-think a situation. The positive result of trying any of these three routes to change, is that the others will most likely follow. If you decide to manage your emotions differently (re-thinking) you will begin to notice that your new behavior brings different results in those around you. With these different results, your thinking will change, your behavior will be different, and soon you are likely to gain a better understanding of yourself.

Counseling or Psychotherapy as a Method for Change

Counseling or psychotherapy, which are essentially the same process, can assist you in developing a deeper understanding of yourself. Most often you may enter therapy because you are in emotional or spiritual pain due to situations within yourself like depression or due to situations outside of yourself like a family problem. Frequently both situations are occurring, internal stress as well as difficult external circumstances. Whatever brings you into therapy, the work lies in gaining a better understanding of yourself and your relationship to others.

Education and Experience

I have been licensed since 1992, and working in the field of counseling and psychotherapy since 1986. My education includes a Masters Degree in Clinical Counseling and Family Psychology, a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, and a Certificate in Chemical Dependency Studies.

Before opening a private practice, I held positions of Director and Program Manager in the non-profit sector. In particular, program manager for a shelter for battered women, a day treatment program for addicted and acting out adolescents, and director of an adult outpatient chemical dependency treatment program. Besides the direct counseling work in these programs, my eight years of combined experience in program design and management have been vital to understanding the challenges facing individuals in Silicon Valley. I am a guest lecturer at U.C. Santa Cruz, and have acted as training consultant to the Department of Alcohol and Drug Services of Santa Clara County.
